a day in the life
We believe that each day is a fresh start filled with new opportunities to play, learn, and make connections with one another, nature, and our community. At The Community School, there is no one typical day, but rather a balance of predictable structure and flexibility to embrace new possibilities and experience wonder.
morning arrival
Every child is greeted warmly by staff when they arrive at school each day. Our close-knit school enables every staff member to get to know each child.
circle time
Every child is a valued member of our community. Classes gather in a circle (at least once each day) to greet one another, sing, read a book, share their thoughts, and have discussions.
outdoor explorations
We spend a large portion of our day in our outdoor classroom. We believe that fresh air, and a variety of surfaces to walk, run, and climb benefit every child no matter what the season or weather. A favorite phrase at The Community School is, “there’s no such thing as bad weather…only bad clothes.”
creative art activities
Teachers offer a variety of process art opportunities to allow each child to experience and express art as it suits them.
practical life experiences
Children love to do things “by myself” and we strive to offer experiences to allow them to practice their self-help and life skills. Children are encouraged to dress for indoor and outdoor play independently and care for their belongings. They are also given the tools to engage in authentic life experiences like raking leaves or shoveling snow outdoors. Teachers also offer monthly cooking activities where the children help with everything from cutting vegetables to stirring a batter.
pre-academic skills
Through our play-based approach, we embed developmentally appropriate opportunities for children to explore math, reading, writing, science, and social studies throughout the school day.
walking field trips
Located in the heart of downtown Maynard, classes regularly go for walks around the neighborhood. Whether to go on a scavenger hunt, visit a local business, view a mural, or observe the flow of the Assabet River, there is always something new to enjoy.
community connections
As our name implies, we draw strength from being part of the community that surrounds us. From local businesses and non-profit organizations to our local library, post office, fire department, and police officers, we embrace special guests and opportunities to connect with our community. View our experiences here.
caring connections
Social-Emotional growth is fostered by caring connections between staff and students, and supported between children.
home-school continuum
We believe that families, caregivers, and early educators need to communicate regularly to support each child. We utilize a parent application to stay in contact with families and provide pictures and anecdotes about your child’s day. We welcome open communication and collaboration.
